ABSTRACT:

The use of existing local cultivars as highly productive genetic material for breeding new varieties is discussed. Importance of efficient work with genetic resources for the preservation of crop diversity is explained. It is pointed out that for proper management of genetic resources the main task is to evaluate the existing material, to renew the partly disappeared cultivars and place them in the Gene Bank. The use of local genetic resources such as old folk-selected as well as wild-growing varieties should be practiced as they have adapted to local conditions.
