Legal use of insecticides is dictated by instructions on the label attached to the insecticide container and the applicator must always follow the label use provisions. The following are recommendations based on results of efficacy trials conducted in Oklahoma or similar regions within the U.S.A.
Pests on plants at the flowering stage.
DO NOT MAKE INSECTICIDE APPLICATIONS TO FLOWERING STAGE PLANTS. INSECTICIDES WILL REPEL AND/OR KILL POLLINATING INSECTS INCLUDING BEES THAT ARE REQUIRED TO POLLINATE FLOWERS. ALLOW A 2-4 WEEK PERIOD FOR POLLINATION OF FLOWERS FOR PROPER FRUIT SET.
Aphids oxydemeton-methyl (Meta Systox-R, Gowan) OR imidacloprid (Admire, Bayer) for plants at the fruit to harvest stage.
Cucumber beetles carbofuran (Furadan, FMC) applied to the seed furrow at planting OR permethrin (Ambush/Pounce, FMC or Syngenta) OR esfenvalerate (Asana, Dupont) OR endosulfan (Thiodan, FMC) applied to plant foliage for early to mid-season control.
Oxydemeton-methyl (Meta Systox-R, Gowan) OR bifenthrin (Capture, FMC) OR fenpropathrin (Danitol, Valent) applied to plants for control at the fruiting to harvest stage.
Spider mites dicofol (Kelthan, Rohm & Haas) or avermectin (Agri Mek, Syngenta) applied to plant foliage for mid- to late-season control.
Squash bugs - carbofuran (Furadan, FMC) applied to the seed furrow at planting OR permethrin (Ambush/Pounce, FMC or Syngenta) OR esfenvalerate (Asana, Dupont) applied to plant foliage for early to mid-season control. Oxydemeton-methyl (Meta Systox-R, Gowan) OR bifenthrin (Capture, FMC) OR fenpropathrin (Danitol, Valent) applied to plants for control at the fruiting to harvest stage.
Thrips - carbofuran (Furadan, FMC) applied to the seed furrow at planting OR permethrin (Ambush/Pounce, FMC or Syngenta) OR esfenvalerate (Asana, Dupont) applied to plant foliage for control on seedling stage plants.
Squash vine borer, pickleworm and melonworm generally are abundant only in mid- to late-season and will be controlled by the same insecticides as used to control squash bugs and cucumber beetles.
