Pollination
Introduction to Pollination
Cucurbit crops are pollinated by insects with various species of bees being of particular importance. Effective pollination is particularly important for the production of good yields of quality melon fruits.
Factor Affecting Pollination
Effective pollination is important for producing good yields of properly shaped fruits. It is important that there be an adequate population of honeybees available to ensure good pollination. Pollination can be reduced when certain weather conditions reduce honeybee activity or when other flowering crops or other vegetation attract honeybees away from cucurbit crops. Proper placement of honeybees in cucurbit fields is often necessary for profitable crop production. For more details on managing honeybees see Cucurbit Integrated Crop Management
Protecting Pollinators
Growers are at times faced with the dilemma of wanting to control insect pests in cucurbit crops while, at the same time, having to encourage and protect honeybees. It is best to try to keep pests under control prior to flowering so that pesticide applications will not be needed once honeybees are active in the field. If pesticides must be applied after flowering has begun, evening applications are advised since flowers will be closed and bees will be least active at this time. Consult with your County Extension Personnel on which pesticides to use in such cases.
