Introduction and Objectives
During the past few years vegetable producers within the state have
voiced interest in the production of onions for local markets. One issue that
producers have is the lack of varietal performance data that has been available
to assist them in the selection of the highest quality and highest yielding
cultivars for Oklahoma conditions. A transplanted variety trial was completed
to provide producers with information on bulb size and overall yield.
Methods and Materials
A transplanted onion variety trial was completed utilizing 21 different
onion cultivars including yellow and red cultivars. Trial cultivars were seeded
in the greenhouse in either early or mid November of 2001 and transplanted to
the field on 4/04/02 (Table 1). Plants were spaced six inches apart in single
row beds; beds being on three feet centers. Plant density was approximately
29,000 plants per acre. The trial was harvested on 7/09/02 and data were
recorded for three different bulb size classes and overall yield in pounds.
