Major Activities
- Plan and conduct horticulture related educational events for county Extension Educators and producers.
- Initiate and edit monthly newsletters for consumer and commercial horticulture target audiences.
- Instruct growers in the use of recommended weed, insect and disease control measures.
- Develop Internet-based and portable-media-based electronic educational and pest advisory materials for commercial producers.
- Conduct field demonstrations and applied research on production technologies for watermelon, onions, melons, sweet corn etc.
- Conduct applied research on weed control in onions and melons.
- Conduct turf cultivar evaluations and demonstrations.
- Establish USDA-funded research effort to develop weed management technology for sustainable/organic vegetable production.
Major Accomplishments
- Provided leadership for the establishment of a vegetable producer support and education program that integrated the participation of county, state university and USDA-ARS professionals and industry.
- Secure and manage USDA-funded (PMAP) projects for development of IPM systems for cucurbits (P.I./ $93,000), Internet-based IPM information systems (So. Reg. IPM) (P.I./ $33,000) and organic vegetable production technology (Co. P.I./ $196,000).
- Established a statewide cucurbit production educational meeting that has been held annually for 6 years and has been highly acclaimed by national and local producer organizations.
- Provided technical support that enabled the establishment of a commercial onion production and marketing operation.
- Made significant contributions to weed control technology and information availability for Oklahoma vegetable producers. My efforts lead to improved recommendations and contributed to acquisition of new herbicide labels.
