Soil Type: Bernow fine-loamy, siliceous, thermic Glossic Paleudalf. Other soils in the region are more or less sandy. A clay hardpan can exist close to the soil surface.
Location: Lane, Oklahoma.

Typical soil pH: 5-5.5
Add all fertilizer preplant at rates recommended by soil tests.
Sowing: In mid-April at a rate of 75 to 100 lbs/acre. Row spacing 30 or 36 inches. Sowing depth 1 inch.
Planting window: 15 April to 1 May.
Harvest: When seed moisture content is between 15 and 20%. This will require drying of seed to 13%. Depending on the final destination seed will have to be cleaned, and likely bagged (preferably in paper).
Water: If there is insufficient soil moisture irrigate with 2 inches of water following sowing. In a normal year natural precipitation will carry the plants through to flowering. When 50% of plants flower, at pod set, and when pods begin to fill it is essential that irrigation be applied if normal precipitation is insufficient. At each stage apply 2 inches of water.
